anything for you; all of this is true (locked to

[Even with the initial reservations that Cadmus had about their son dating the heir to House Vestra, it would seem that time has proven them both wrong and right in a great many directions. Cadmus has seen the error of his ways and wariness, and has embraced his son's love with open arms. He's even grown to enjoy Hubert's company, all be told; Octavia could see it easily when the two got the chance to talk with one another, when she was busy showering her son with affection and care and all of the things her little sugarplum deserved in the world.
That isn't to say that Octavia would ever neglect her husband or Hubert himself, though! Oh, no, Octavia von Hevring was a force of nature, made of all of the love and affection that she believed the world should be showered in. She more than happily embraced Hubert as her sweet Linny's boyfriend, and as time has gone on, she's only grown more secure in the decision to trust that broody boy over the rumors that surrounded him. The rumors of his father's death at his own hands, which she had found utter hogwash at best and well deserved on the end of that boy's father at worst. It's so very clear in how closed off Hubert is that he's never experienced such love in his life, at least to Octavia, so more than anything she was glad when Cadmus came around.
Octavia's thoughts drift to those days as she sits outside of the Hevring manor, a sketchpad in hand as she anticipates Hubert's arrival. It's been quite some time since they saw each other last, and he seems to be coming alone this time. Cadmus had opened the letter easily and they both read it a week or so ago, before Octavia insisted that they send word of their approval "as soon as the morning dew should grace us with it's presence, and not a moment sooner!"--her words, of course. Cadmus was inside ensuring that the house maids and butlers were having everything prepared before Hubert's arrival, and Octavia had the simple job of greeting the boy she's been all too happy to watch her son fall for.
Not without a cup of her morning coffee, of course! A small clearing of the throat gets Octavia to look in the direction of the house's elderly head maid, Agatha, and her look brightens.]
Ah, Aggie! I hadn't even the fainted idea that you were here! I must have truly been lost in thought!
["It is no trouble, my lady. I have brought you your morning coffee; Lord Hubert should be arriving quite soon, so I thought it prudent to ensure that you were taken care of."]
Oh, Aggie, your sweetness as clear as day! Thank you very kindly.
[It's not like Octavia needs the caffeine boost; her energy is all natural, akin to that of a young adult even in her old age.]
I do hope Hubert will be here soon! I can't wait to welcome him in--is everything prepared for his arrival?
["Indeed; the finest coffee has been procured for your meeting together, and nary an ounce of sugar nor milk is in sight, save for Master Cadmus's tea. The guest room is prepared with the black sheets and bedding you procured from town days prior, should Lord Hubert wish to spend the night. Brunch is all prepared, with every item on the menu procured and prepared to perfection."
Octavia's hands clasp together, her expression brightening as her eyes close.]
As perfect as ever! Not that I would expect any less! Now, do be sure to take the rest of the day off once Lord Hubert has arrived and you have taken care of anything he needs brought to his room, won't you? You have earned that much, for your ever so delightful service!
[read: For putting up with the Hevring family's eccentricities for at least three generations.
"...As my lady wishes." Of course, the head maid bows easily, before the sound of horses in the distance signals the arrival of their guest of honor. "It would seem Lord Hubert is here--"
Octavia winds up at least putting her coffee cup down on the tea table in front of the estate before being off like a shot, her sketchbook flying out of her hands in the process and only being saved from the ground by the grace of the head maid's quick timing.
But of course, Hubert's likely not going to be by himself for long as he gets off--he'll likely be able to see a small woman of barely over five feet rushing towards him, long foresty green hair whipping behind her as deep blue eyes set their sights on the boy she's watched her son fall for, who she adores almost akin to family. She may be nearing fifty and certainly looking it, with her hair starting to gray and her face starting to wrinkle, but age hasn't taken her energy from her. Not even a long green dress and sunhat could hold her back from rushing up to greet him as far as she's concerned!!]
Hubert, Hubert! [Octavia rushes up to him easily, all too bold and brash as ever, with energy to spare as she laughs, pure and bright.] Ah, dear Hubert, it's been so long since we've seen you last! Please, tell me, are you faring well? Was your trip a peaceful one?! Oh, I do so hope it was! No less would be acceptable!
[...Let it be known that she shall never stop being Like This.]

So yes, everything is going according to plan, at the moment. Since he was nearly killed in battle against the last remaining forces that stood in Her Majesty's way, things have gone shockingly well. Yes, Those Who Slither in the Dark still exist, but they have been driven into hiding. The Empire - all of Fódlan now - is settling into Her Majesty's rule, and finally (finally) things are beginning to quiet down.
That's why he's decided to move on to the next phase of his plan. He wouldn't dare think about it were things not in a stable place, as doing so could potentially bring harm to Her Majesty. But since things are stable and Those Who Slither in the Dark are in no position to take the Empress' life, now seems like the perfect time to take the next step.
Hubert wants to marry Linhardt von Hevring, and in order to do that, he needs to discuss the matter with Linhardt's family.
It isn't something that's required, not really. If he wanted to, he could simply ask Linhardt on his own, without anyone else's input. But of course Hubert would never do that, and he's already received Her Majesty's permission and blessing (and the assertion that it's about damn time, her words). Still, after all the trouble he's gone to in order to get to know Cadmus and Octavia, he wouldn't dare ask for their son's hand in marriage without their permission.
...Not that he plans on stopping if they don't give their permission. If necessary, he can accept Linhardt into House Vestra. It's certainly not ideal, but he can provide for Linhardt if it comes down to that.
He doubts it'll be an issue, though. Considering just how quickly the Hevrings accepted him and how jubilant Octavia always seems to be around him (though that does seem to be how she is in general), he can only imagine that this will go well.
Probably. That's assuming he can actually express himself properly and not freeze up horribly. It still isn't easy around Linhardt - his boyfriend - so he imagines this is going to be a bit of a production. That hasn't discouraged him at all, though, which is why he sent the letter ahead to announce his arrival.
(Showing up unannounced would make it look like something bad had happened, or even worse, that he was doing Her Majesty's bidding and silencing another noble family. Not that he would ever do such a thing to Linhardt's parents without a damn good reason, but he really didn't want to send the wrong message. It took him five drafts of the letter before he finally sent it, and Her Majesty had scolded him for once again overthinking things and shooed him from the castle before he found another reason to delay.)
So here he is now, finally reaching the estate. It isn't as though it's a particularly difficult ride, but he's all too pleased to have his feet back on solid ground as he dismounts the (all black, of course) horse he'd ridden here.
Unsurprisingly, Octavia is already here, and just as full of energy as she always is. He can't help but feel a smile tug on the corners of his mouth.]
Thank you for your hospitality, and for your agreement to meet so soon. You have my apologies for any inconvenience I may have caused.
[...And despite everything, he remains exactly as formal as always. Hubert ducks into a bow, though straightens up quickly enough.]
In order: Yes, I am doing just fine, and the trip was without incident.
["Peaceful" is a bit of a stretch given that it involved horseback riding, which he is still not exactly very skilled at.]
How are the two of you doing?
no subject
[Hubert may be as formal as ever, but Octavia doesn't mind at all. Sure she tries to be formal around other nobility and the like, but she's always found it so boring. Where was the color, the vigor in their interactions?! Honestly, with the way things were being set up now with Empress Edelgard's rule, Octavia knew the future would be brighter already.
Octavia's hands clasp in front of her, though, clapping enthusiastically as they come together and she beams at him.]
Good! I would be willing to give any hooligans that made gave that trip incident a piece of my mind, with haste! [Octavia chuckles, though.] Oh, Cadmus and myself are quite fine--everything around the manor has been as peaceful and quiet as ever, what with little Linny off taking care of business elsewhere. We're quite happy to have you visit us!
Do follow me, won't you? Aggie will come and take your things, and we shall be able to talk as you so desire!
[Octavia will...honestly, she's not just going to offer him a hand--much like the force of nature she is, she's absolutely going to attempt to take one of Hubert's sleeves and start guiding him towards the manor with all of the force of a little old lady who's got places to be and things to see!!
Of course, one of those is Hubert, so she's not too harsh with him or anything; she'll even let go if needed. Not that Octavia could ever be harsh, even as the head maid gives her back her morning coffee that she set aside and goes to see if there's anything that needs taking care of--]
no subject
I'm pleased to hear you're both doing well. [He nods at her words, though.] Of course. Lead the way.
[And she certainly will, because her hand finds his sleeve and he's definitely smiling now as he lets her tug him along. Octavia is a force of nature, and there is certainly no stopping her. He wouldn't want to try. He'll follow wherever she leads, doing his best not to look too amused.]
no subject
[Octavia will gladly lead him through the manor, taking him down the hallways to the dining area while gladly talking Hubert's ear off.]
Now don't you worry about leaving so soon--you have been through such a long trip, after all, and we've more than prepared a room for you to stay the night in so you can leave refreshed with youthful vigor in the morning! Ah, and we shall be more than happy to take care of your meals as well; brunch is already prepared, and anything you ask of us is yours, dear Hubert!
So please, do not hesitate to ask for anything at all, won't you?
no subject
Motherly, he supposes. She fusses because she's the sort of person who needs to care about everyone, a trait commonly associated with mothers. Naturally, that isn't the case for all mothers, but it's... nice, he supposes. It's nice to feel looked after and cared for, after so long not really understanding it.
Now isn't the time for thoughts like that, however.]
You have my thanks. House Hevring is - as always - more than prepared to accommodate me. I'm not sure how long I'll stay; the... business I have to attend here isn't something that should take long.
[The hesitation might be worrying? She certainly doesn't seem worried, but given his reputation... Maybe he should clarify.]
There... is something I have to ask of the both of you, though that can wait until we meet with Count Hevring.
[...He is fully aware he has permission to call them Cadmus and Octavia, but he is going to continue to be exactly this overly polite.]
no subject
Either way, Octavia isn't put out by the idea that he won't stay for long; if he doesn't, they'll certainly have a nice conversation over brunch at the very least, and that makes Octavia happy as ever.]
Oh, don't you fret, dear boy. You're free to stay as long as you're able, or as long as you wish!
[...Of course, the admission on his part gets Octavia to look in his direction rather than down the hallway, and her eyes soften briefly as they walk. She's not even close to wary, at all; she's...absolutely the sort of person who could be assassinated all too easily, if caught unaware.]
Of course, sweetie. Let us not delay a moment longer, then; if you've a request of us, we shall hear it post-haste!
[...Of course, because even if she understands Hubert is polite Octavia will correct him anyway--]
And simply 'Cadmus' will do, dear! You are dear presence to the family after all!
[Once they've reached the door to the dining room, there's a tall man with gray hair more than happy to hail them inside of the room so that they may be able to chat.]
Caaaaadmus, my love! Our guest of the hour has arrived! ♥
Yes, honey, I do see him right beside you. [Cadmus needs little introduction, with his ever exasperated yet all too loving tone, he's sure, but he could hear Octavia's talking from all the way over there. He's got his own dayclothes on, decked out in green while he pushes his glasses up after he bows.] It is good to see you, Hubert. I trust that you have been welcomed most humbly, but please, allow me to extend my warmest welcome to you as well.
[Octavia laughs happily, letting go of Hubert's sleeve and clapping her hands.]
Didn't I tell you he would be happy to see you?! Oh, Hubert, come in, please. Let us not delay!
no subject
Thoughts like that are hardly necessary now. The thought disgusts him, and makes him clench his fists tightly until the moment has passed.
He nods at her correction, though has no plans to start calling them by name any time soon. Perhaps later he'll have to, assuming this goes well and they approve.
(He can't see why they wouldn't, considering how kind they are to him already. But he isn't going to assume anything. They know the rumors about him, and while they trust him with Linhardt, marriage is a big step. They could have any number of reasons for refusing to allow it, and this would be so much easier with their permission—)
Hubert focuses as they enter the dining room, returning Cadmus' bow the moment Octavia releases his sleeve.]
I have, of course. Countess Hevring is as energetic and excited as always. [hubert she literally just said—] I have already thanked her, but please allow me to extend my gratitude to you as well. Thank you for meeting with me on such short notice.
[He raises from the bow and folds his hands behind his back to keep himself from fidgeting.]
I can assure you that everything is fine, and I've only come here on business. [There isn't any hesitation this time, but it feels wrong to call it business...] Or something of the sort, anyway. I won't trouble you for long.
no subject
[Octavia's tone is a bit of a whine as he calls her Countess Hevring again, and her face goes into a pout as she's about five seconds from pinching his cheek or his ear to tell him to live a little--
Thankfully, Cadmus is here to be his wife's impulse control, gladly stepping in and giving his wife a Look before going back to Hubert. Octavia just...kind of crosses her arms behind Hubert, pouting.]
It's truly no trouble at all; I'm certain my very excitable wife has told you that much, but please, allow me to say the same. It must be important business if you have gone so far out of your way to ask us, so please, make yourself at home.
[Cadmus is as levelheaded as ever, as he leads them all into the dining room and Octavia walks on ahead to sit with her husband; they both sit across from Hubert so he can take a chair by himself, Octavia setting her coffee down nearby and resting her arms against the table to prop her chin up, staring at Hubert with her ever energetic smile.
Cadmus takes the seat next to her, an all too milk and honey infused Cinnamon Tea in his own cup as he sits with dignity and composure, as expected of an earl of the territory. The servants will come by quickly to ask what they would all like to eat, and delivery it with haste should they ask of it, but Hubert will find that they've already prepared a nice, piping hot cup of black coffee for him at the table.
Either way, once the food has been ordered and brought to them to eat...Cadmus does look at Hubert and tips his head a bit.]
Now then, what sort of business do you wish to speak of?
Yes, my dear boy! Is there something we may be able to do for you?
no subject
He nods at Cadmus' words and follows, taking up his spot opposite both of them at the dining table. He isn't surprised to find a cup of black coffee waiting for him, still hot and the exact roast he prefers. Even without Linhardt to prepare his parents for the visit, they are ready for Hubert's presence here at the estate. It's... honestly really nice, and he's not entirely sure what feelings threaten to strangle him, but they're certainly present and doing just that.
Thankfully, he's distracted by the food orders (whatever the Hevrings are having works for him, he's really not all that picky) and he settles a bit with his gloved hands around the mug of coffee.
He's prepared for the question, and takes a moment to mentally run through what he wishes to say and how to express it.]
There is something I would ask of the two of you. The time I have spent with your son has been... an incredible experience. While we have not been dating for very long, we have known each other for over five years now, and over the course of that time, I feel I have learned plenty about Linhardt. The bond we share is not one I would have imagined myself capable of forming five years ago. Linhardt has changed me and challenged me, and ultimately guided me into becoming the man I am now.
[Okay, good start. All of that is very true, and while it's a little awkward to admit to Linhardt's parents it's very true. He needs them to know and understand just how much Linhardt means to him, because he isn't very good at expressing it in public, or even in words. But they have to know, because what he's going to ask...]
As I said, we have not been dating long, and I understand if this is... rather sudden, and perhaps entirely unexpected... [Oh no, he's losing his train of thought and his grasp on the words he so desperately needs to say—] I understand where I can come off as cold and uncaring, but I promise you that your son's safety and happiness are incredibly important to me, and I only wish for the best for him—
[Aaaaand there it goes, completely slipping out of his fingers. Hubert's grip tightens around the cup of coffee and he forces himself to take a sip before setting the cup back down. His death grip on the cup has not lessened at all, and his entire body is wound tight with tension. It isn't like him to get nervous like this. Confessing had been so much easier. Though perhaps it isn't fair to compare them, because he'd confessed just moments shy of nearly dying, and adrenaline is an amazing way to get someone to do something they wouldn't normally do.
He takes a deep breath, closes his eyes, and forces himself to try again. Slower this time.]
Linhardt is one of the most important people in my life, and I want nothing more than to remain by his side for as long as I am able. I have come here today to ask you both for your blessing.
[...]
Would the two of you... allow me to ask for Linhardt's hand in marriage?
no subject
very easily. Being by the sea certainly gives one a taste for such things, after all.
Both Cadmus and Octavia listen intently as Hubert speaks; Cadmus has, if nothing else, mastered the art of listening carefully from his time as the Minister of the Interior, calm and willing to let Hubert speak while he regales them. Octavia, by contrast, seems ever teeming with excitement--she nods her head vigorously as Hubert explains himself, only occasionally sipping her cup of coffee while her eyes light up.]
Ah, two old friends, realizing their feelings for each other after so many years?! What a quaint delight! Oh, Linny told us quite a bit about you two but I wouldn't have imagined--
Honey, please allow the man to finish first. [Cadmus's hand goes to gently thread through the fingers of Octavia's nearest, unoccupied hand, his expression soft yet wanting to give Hubert some patience. His expression is likewise soft when his look goes back to Hubert.] It certainly sounds as if our son has done a great many things for you. I am glad to hear that.
[Cadmus doesn't have the faintest clues of the magnitude of it all, and Octavia could theorize all day, but her look is soft as she gently leans into her husband's shoulder and he leans back as they listen. Their looks briefly shifts to ones of worry as Hubert starts to lose track; Octavia's expression goes openly concerned, and while Cadmus's is more subdued, his brows furrow and knit into worry. Did he really think they didn't know that? Octavia certainly had all of the trust and confidence in the world in that regard, and Cadmus...well, he had to learn to trust the man who seemed to adore his son so, but Hubert had earned his shrewd trust.
Octavia is about to speak up, to put down her cup of coffee and reach her hand out to try and give Hubert some form of acknowledgement that she knows, while he's got that cup in a death grip, but then he breathes, and talks slower, and Octavia's smile is still a worried one but they're both listening as Hubert gets to his point and...
Well, it takes barely a second for Octavia's eyes to light up as if she's been set into the most sparkling fire that ever existed, only held back from jumping up and taking one of Hubert's hands by her husband being literally right there, but the big, delighted smile on her face is likely an indication of her answer--]
Oh my goodness! You truly mean to marry our little Linny!? Oh, what joy! What rapture! Oh, I could tell the two of you were close when I saw you, but to think that you would wish to marry our little boy...!
[Cadmus, by contrast, seems to contemplate while Octavia goes on, but he does swiftly cut in to question Hubert. His expression isn't full of distrust, but there's a neutral look on his face not unlike the one his son wore all of those years ago, when Hubert asked Linhardt to join him in his cause.]
You are asking a once-in-a-lifetime question of us, Hubert, and I understand the gravity of such a thing quite well. It is certainly true that you two have been dating for only a short time; certainly, if you two have known each other for so long, I could understand why you would wish to ask our son for his hand despite that...
I must pose a question to you as well, however.
[Octavia is almost ready to cut in with a remark or another, about how he shouldn't be so discerning--they love each other, that's all too obvious to her, and they should grant him their blessing--]
Will our son be joining your family, or will you be joining ours?
[...That's about the point where Cadmus's look softens, just a touch; it's not a yes yet, and it's not really even a reaction to what Hubert is saying, but...
Well, Cadmus is curious.]
no subject
For what, exactly? It isn't as though he expects the worst, and yet he finds himself attempting to prepare for it. If they say no, there are other options. They aren't ideal, but—
He doesn't get long enough to come up with any plans whatsoever, because Octavia is beaming and her answer is exactly as overwhelming so much else about her. He's somewhere between sort of surprised and pleased, though his expression settles a bit into something more neutral as Cadmus speaks up. Octavia's support isn't really what he was all that concerned about, after all.
The question he poses is a fair one, and one he hadn't thought to address because it's so obvious. Hubert's answer comes swiftly, with no hesitation.]
I would never ask him to join House Vestra. The Vestra line ends with me.
[...Okay, technically he has younger siblings, but that's a complicated matter he'd rather not get into and this sounds better, so.]
I would never be so presumptuous as to assume I would be invited to join House Hevring, however.
[...hubert why are you like this.]
no subject
[Cadmus mulls that over. His grip is light on his wife's hand, and her own look goes to him as if she's worried that he's legitimately going to say no. How could they possibly turn such a kind boy away? Someone who loves their son, adores their son, and...truly, isn't love what should win out in the end?]
I have seen the way you two care for one another, you know. How adoring the two of you are towards one another, and just how much our boy trusts you without even a sliver of hesitation. I won't deny that I have held a wariness for the Vestra family, and that had extended to you at first. I had worried that our boy may have walked into trouble that not even he could fathom.
But you are a trustworthy man, Hubert. I see it in the way you two adore one another, and how hard all of you fought to earn that trust of mine--
Well, of course we did! Darling of mine, I truly don't think this is the right time to bring such things up, you're going to make the boy even more nervous than he already is!
[Cadmus looks to see Octavia's cheeks puffed out like a child's, more than ready to fight in Hubert's corner due to what she's seen of him. Inwardly, he notes that this is both why he fell for her in the first place (that deep desire to do right by people, to care for them when no one else would, to forge her own way and force the world to follow), and why she could have never taken the position of Minister of the Interior. (she could be used so easily, or she'd set off the Minister of Military Affairs even more than he does on the daily) He supposes he can see the point, however.]
However...don't you think that you're being a touch presumptuous yourself, in assuming that we would not invite you with open arms? When you have not only shown such devotion to our son, but a desire to know the two of us as well?
It's as if you think that we wouldn't consider you family as well, my boy.
[Cadmus does smile lightly at that, and his wife's pout dissipates entirely as she teems with excitement once again--akin to a spell held for too long, ready and waiting--but Cadmus is going to let that set, to see how he reacts.]
no subject
(He ignores how he waits with his back straight, tempted to look down in deference as he prepares himself for distant and cold words. Disapproval, certainly, but never a raised voice, never any anger. Because he's not good enough, because he'll never be good enough, and he will only accept the best—)
Then Cadmus continues, and even when Octavia interrupts on his behalf, his expression and posture don't change. He's waiting for the answer he's certain he'll get. Not that he believes he gave Cadmus the wrong answer to that question - he can't imagine the head of House Hevring would want his only child to be accepted into another house anyway, much less one of such ill repute - but he awaits it anyway, because Hubert is always prepared for the worst.
At least, that's what he tells himself.
In all that preparing for the worst, he absolutely didn't have any plan in mind for when he receives Cadmus' approval. Of course, it can't be as simple as receiving his approval, instead he says something that might as well have physically punched Hubert directly in the chest for all the damage it's doing.
It's as if you think that we wouldn't consider you family as well, my boy.
Family. Family. As if someone like him could ever be welcomed into something so loving and open and caring as House Hevring's family. All he was seeking was approval, certainly not—
Hubert freezes - eyes wide and expression quickly slipping into something nearly worried before he catches himself. He bows from his seat, which is not the most elegant thing in the world, but it's at least an excuse to hide his face for a moment while he attempts to compose himself.
Letting himself slip over words like that, over sentiment like that... He really is in over his head, isn't he?]
You have my thanks. I am... far more honored than I can ever express, I'm afraid.
[Even when he sits back up, it's impossible for him to lift his eyes from his coffee cup.]
You have my word that I will do everything in my power to protect your son and to provide for him, to do all I can for him. [To be worthy of him.] Assuming he says yes, of course.
[...How stupid, he really shouldn't be assuming that Linhardt will. They've only been dating for a short amount of time, this is really presumptuous of him—]

Hubert speaks up and sits back up, only staring into his coffee. They both listen to his words easily, and Cadmus nods his head in understanding. Hubert has always seemed perhaps a little unexpressive, but he certainly doesn't hold it against him. His assurances, his promises don't go unnoticed, and Cadmus is about to speak up when...
...Well, when Octavia unlaces their fingers and practically rushes around the table over to Hubert's side, attempting to wrap her thin arms around him in a warm, loving embrace. He can't even stop his wife, this is just what it's gonna be like--]
Oh, you shouldn't worry about that! I'm sure our Linny would be utterly delighted to say yes to you, you sweet, darling boy! Oh, to know he has someone so delightfully devoted to him, who's willing to do so much for him...it's almost enough to make a woman cry tears of joy!
Octavia, honey, don't you think that may be a touch much--
Not at all! [i'm so sorry hubert] No, if he is to be family, then I want him to know he is incredibly welcome! To experience love, light, laughter, joy--everything that he has clearly not experienced with that cad of a father--
Octavia!
What? It is true, isn't it? [Octavia briefly looks to Hubert, before simply tuning out Cadmus trying to tell her to have some decency for once. Octavia's words are surprisingly warm when she speaks to Hubert next, the smile on her face soft.] Oh, pay my fuddy-duddy husband no mind! Hubert, darling Hubert--even if our son should not say yes to a proposal, I doubt that will mean it permanently. No, when the time comes--should it be now, or should it be in the future, you will always be welcome to join our family. We would truly love nothing more than to accept you--I would love nothing more than to accept such a wonderfully devoted son-in-law into our eclectic little family for decades to come! ♥
[...]
No, no. None of this in-law business--when the day comes that we shall accept you, you will be our son. Blood shall not matter, for we shall take you in happily, should you be amendable to such things.
Is that...acceptable?
[Perhaps surprisingly, Octavia's words are just the tiniest hint uncertain. It's a lot to ask of someone she's convinced hasn't experienced so much as a mote of love in their life, and even Octavia can realize the weight of such a thing. It makes her uncertain, perhaps worried, and she'll loosen her grip on him without letting go entirely.]

She continues, heedless of her husband's warning tone and every word that leaves her feels like a knife in his chest, threatening to slice him to ribbons. She's so kind and caring, as he's noted countless times before, but to have that directed at him - solely at him - it's... entirely overwhelming, to be completely honest.
Octavia loosens her grip a bit and her words are no longer quite as quick and confident, and all he can really do for a long moment is stare as his brain tries to catch up to the conversation.
She really would want someone like him as family, even if Linhardt didn't agree to marrying him right away? She would allow him into House Hevring without knowing everything about him, without seeing all he's done and all he's capable of? She would trust him with both Linhardt and her husband, and offer him a place at their side as family?
He doesn't know how to react. It's that thought that grounds him, that reminds him that he needs to do something, because they're certainly staring at him and getting more and more worried the longer this goes on without any sort of response from him. So maybe for once in his damned life he can shut his brain up and allow himself to go with what feels natural, because he's already received their approval, and it isn't like he can really mess this up all that much now, right?]
...I'm... not entirely sure I know what to say. I'm not used to such kind offers. Your generosity and kindness has always been a bit difficult for me to accept so freely, but this offer... It's perhaps the nicest thing I have ever received.
[Someone like him doesn't deserve the warmth and love that Linhardt's been given. But maybe... maybe he can prove that someday he'll deserve their trust, at least.]
Thank you. I... would like nothing more than to be accepted as a part of your family—
[There was more to that, but he finds his breath catching and suddenly the words refuse to come. Hubert's suddenly very aware that there's a stinging sensation at the corners of his eyes and he realizes belatedly that such a thing means he's on the verge of crying. Crying? Him? He doesn't cry. How could he be nearing his breaking point just from kindness?
He clears his throat and moves to pick up his coffee cup, quickly busying himself with drinking from it and trying to strangle any and all emotions that might threaten to make him actually cry.]

Oh, Hubert...
[Octavia's voice cracks briefly, and she honestly looks like she's about to cry too as she listens to Hubert and hugs him tightly again, and Cadmus winds up walking over to the other side of the table with a worried look before setting a hand on Hubert's unoccupied shoulder.]
Listen, Hubert. It doesn't have to be right now that you have to accept it. You can accept such a thing when you're good and ready to, if it's too overwhelming.
[Cadmus's words are firm, but there's a gentleness there that's beyond that firm edge. Something fatherly.]
But well...my wife's already made her stance on this obvious, but I'll offer the same thing to you. If you want to be one of our sons, we'll accept you into House Hevring--our family--readily. Your life as a Vestra won't have to be the only life you lead.
Yes...yes, exactly. I can't imagine Linny would very much mind such a thing...
[...Octavia is absolutely blubbering, oh my god. Cadmus looks over at her and keeps his motions gentle on Hubert's shoulder.]
We're here for you, Hubert. Here for both of you, always; that's what family does. We take care of each other.

Is this what it's like to have a normal family? Is this what most of their classmates experienced? If that's the case, then he can start to understand how so many of them were so much more compassionate and trusting. They were things he saw as flaws back then, but now... Now he can only see them as strengths. Looking at a cruel and twisted world and choosing to be kind and trusting takes an unbelievable amount of strength and courage.]
Thank you. For everything.
[The words are a little stilted, and he hasn't relaxed at all, but slowly he sets the coffee cup down.]
I... very much would like that, someday. For now, though... I plan on proposing to Linhardt soon. I have a time and place in mind, and will have everything prepared shortly. Once I've heard his answer... then I will accept your offer. I... really would like nothing more than to be a part of your family.
[The words are a bit stiff and halting, hesitant and unsure in a way he normally wouldn't allow in front of... well, anyone. That doesn't mean the words are any less true, and he looks first to Octavia, then to Cadmus. His expression is more relaxed than his posture, though the smile is a bit hesitant, as though he's really not used to it.]
I cannot express just how thankful I am to have been offered such a precious gift.

[The two of them listen to Hubert as he speaks, both nodding in easy agreement; Octavia trying to hold back her own tears, and Cadmus as steady as ever as they listen to him.]
Of course. We should not be counting our chickens before they hatch, after all. What happens next is in Linhardt's hands, and I can only hope that it goes well for the both of you. No matter what direction the future holds.
Yes, yes--as do I! Oh, I do sincerely hope all goes according to plan--that you may be able to sweep our Linny off of his feet with such ease!
[They're both understanding of how stiff he is, at any rate; neither of them seem to mind it, allowing him to find the words that he needs, and Octavia will at least loosen her grip on him a little bit and Cadmus will lighten the grip on his shoulder. They both do look to see his face, though, and both of their own smiles are open and happy as can be.]
Think nothing of it! Why, we would be remiss not to offer such kindness to you!
Indeed. It is not an offer that we intend to make lightly, after all.
[...But you know--]
For now, however...since you have obtained your answer, we should enjoy ourselves. A celebration, however minor, of whatever possibilities are to come. Would you be amendable to that, Hubert?
[It's certainly all well and good to keep offering warmth and sincerity, but they've made their point very clear. Even if it's only for this much time, Hubert is still a guest of honor; even if he only intends to stay until brunch is over now that he has his answer, the two of them are more than happy to celebrate the trust earned between them all, if nothing else.]

[If he's flustered this badly already, then he may need to revise his proposal. Again. Though admittedly this wasn't quite what he was expecting, so maybe things will work out just fine...]
I'm certain things will go as well as they can, and I'm prepared for whatever answer Linhardt will give.
[...this is a fucking lie]
Ah, I... [The idea of a celebration is also certainly unexpected. His gaze darts down to the tablecloth before he corrects it.] Yes, I... I'd like that. I'm very pleased you both approve.
[Of him. Of him and Linhardt. Of everything he is, he supposes.]
