[Spending time with Jacinthe like this has been... something. Yeah, sure, let's just leave it at "something". Maybe not quite as bad as he was expecting in some ways, far worse in others. That woman has a way of managing to irritate the absolute hell out of him, while at the same time never actually making such a nuisance of herself that it'd be better to call this whole thing off. She allows him plenty of time to carry out his own duties - including using said time to try to get a read on the SBC members. In fact, that might be softening the blow of her unstoppable force to his immovable object (his ego); there's a disconnect between Jacinthe and her followers. He didn't expect them to be anything like the Rust Syndicate because they aren't structured the same or serve the same purpose. The Rust Syndicate is a home for those without one, a place to belong and fit in as long as you follow the rules and carry out your orders to the best of your ability and don't disappoint Corbeau repeatedly. You pat my back, I'll pat yours, that sort of thing.

But the SBC... Well, they're a group of battle-obsessed rich kids who have their own ideals, purposes, and goals, and they don't all align with Jacinthe. In fact, he'd guess that most don't align with Jacinthe. There are those who seem to hang on her every word, but just as many he's caught rolling their eyes or looking at him with disdain, like the woman's words mean absolutely nothing to them. Not the same style of leadership as within the Rust Syndicate, surely, but she shouldn't be ignored so blatantly either.

Needless to say, he doesn't like it, and he can't help but feel a bit bad for her. Is she even aware of it...? Well, it's not like he's going to burst her bubble if she isn't. The important thing is that the SBC isn't entirely free of suspicion - some of them might have reason to want to do away with her if it means they could ascend to her position, after all. Maybe they had something to do with Philippe's disappearance as well. Hard to say right now, unfortunately.

And still hard to say even after Emma's pointed them in a direction - Corbeau appreciates any and all info, sure, but heading out to hit the ground themselves is a bit dangerous. Perhaps they should've brought some Rust Syndicate members along... but it's too late for regrets now. This seems to have been a bust, but it's as Jacinthe is speaking that he notices something. It could just be light reflecting off a Pokéball or a Potion or something, but you never know until you check, right? So off he goes!]

Not sure; give me a moment.

[While he's examining this, he keeps speaking:] We should head back soon. Don't want to be out too late, especially down here.

[Not that it'd be a problem for him, but Jacinthe stands out like a sore thumb, and even worse, she'd likely complain the entire time if the sun sets and they have to walk all the way back. With any luck, the battle zones won't be anywhere nearby, but better to return before dark just to be safe.]

[Hah, that's definitely going to prove useful. He can't make out exactly what the words are - or even which language (and if I'm jossed on this I'll laugh) - but this proves that it isn't his handiwork. Sure, the Rust Syndicate deals in poisons, but theirs aren't in bottles like this, or use language like that. Corbeau retrieves a pair of gloves from his pocket, as well as a bag to place the bottle in.]

Wouldn't call it the "smoking gun", but turns out we've got something out of our little trip down here.

[He holds the bag up for her to see, a smirk tugging on the corners of his mouth.]

Koffing on the label and foreign script; I'd guess this is our missing poison. Emma should be able to get some use outta this.

[Heh. He doesn't need the praise, but it's not like he'll turn it down. That bag is going into his pocket for now as he nods at the words, allowing Jacinthe to take the lead and keep yapping, until—

Well, until night falls, apparently. Corbeau frowns, pushing his glasses up as he studies the time on his Rotomphone. It isn't as late as the Battle Zones usually go up, but it isn't entirely unheard of for them to pop up now at this time of year. In other words, we forgot to account for the changing of seasons and the shorter hours, probably. Or maybe it is a conspiracy. Hard to say right now, but the important thing is that the map is very clearly displaying that we are smack dab in the middle of a Battle Zone.]

Great. Looks like we've got our work cut out for us.

[Corbeau studies the map intently, trying to determine the best route to get out of the Battle Zone quickly. Usually he'd be down to engage in some battles, maybe even obtain a Challenger's Ticket, but we've got bigger things to worry about than ranking up. The sewers' exit puts them in the middle, with a lot of open space, meaning it'll be easy for other trainers to get the jump on them. Definitely not a good thing, given how much they still don't know about whoever is targeting Jacinthe and the Rust Syndicate. Best to try to escape and get back to the (relative) safety of the SBC and ensure this piece of evidence gets to Emma's hands.]

[Corbeau glances over at Gardevoir, and he's already making a face even before Jacinthe starts speaking and turns to head out. Girl, are you seeing this shit—]

Think for a moment, Jacinthe.

[He moves to catch up with her, picking Scolipede's Pokéball from his belt just in case, but not calling the big bug out just yet.]

It's just the two of us, and though we're quite strong, our unknown assailant has proven that they will take underhanded methods to have a shot at you. We don't know who they are or when they'll strike next, and under cover of darkness - and a Battle Zone - they could escape without detection.

[Looks like there are some trainers roaming up ahead... Stay and listen, or carry on with your desired battles, girlypop?]

[Corbeau's gaze flicks back over to Jacinthe for a moment, but her exasperation is about what he expected. Sure, he can understand where she's coming from. She wants a break from the stress and to take a moment to feel genuinely good again; who doesn't love winning battles and making their way towards their next promotion match? But this is different, and treating it as though it's just another night puts them in too much danger.

Gardevoir gets his attention again and while he has very little familiarity with Psychic-types (for obvious reasons), after the initial flinch, he relaxes enough to allow Gardevoir to show him the way forward. Huh. Damn useful, that.]

Remember what you hired me for? To keep you safe. I'm just doing my job.

[You paid him so!! Much!! Money!!! Don't forget that!!!]

Look, I'd agree with you under other circumstances. But there's too much we don't know about the situation. Better to play it safe than risk being sorry.

[Or worse, end up in the hospital. Or dead. He's really not ruling out that possibility.]

C'mon, we've gotta pick our battles and this isn't a smart decision. There will be plenty of time for battling later.

[Given the way Lebanne's always walked on eggshells around Jacinthe, it stands to reason that her fury is something that he shouldn't want to mess with. Still, Corbeau doesn't back down - he's right and he knows it - so he waits impassively for her to come to a decision. The fact that she isn't immediately ignoring his demands for her own desires is probably a good thing? Yeah.

And she does see the reason in his words eventually, though he's never seen Jacinthe look so displeased. This must be how she felt when Team MZ nearly ruined her little tourney. Possibly even worse, given that she has to actually let go of her plans entirely.]

Then you'll have it. What, you think I'm not also itching for a fight?

[The smirk that tugs on one side of his mouth is a bit wry; he knows how that sounds after denying her her own fun, but it is the truth. After all, within the relative safely of the SBC, there's nothing else to worry about. Jacinthe can battle to her heart's content against her own underlings and Corbeau. And besides, Poison-types are good against Fairy-types, which might be enough for him to manage a win, assuming Gardevoir doesn't run rampant through most of his Pokémon.]

Stay close - and keep Gardevoir out; she'll be able to keep an eye on things better than we can.

[A third set of (psychic) eyes certainly doesn't hurt, anyway. He's assuming the Pokémon can Teleport out of danger if need be as well, which makes her more useful than any of his own Pokémon. It doesn't help that most of his are very large and are likely to attract unwanted attention, after all.]

[hELLO??]

It's not like you asked either!

[oh my god we're so dumb. verbing the noun on anything is apparently going to be a struggle.

But anyway, he allows Jacinthe to continue and then... abruptly switch topics... O...kay, not sure what that was about, but he'll let it slide for now. The important thing is getting out of here, and Gardevoir's doing a good job making sure that they can get out safely. Whatever gave Jacinthe pause is either something she'll bring up later (since he can't see her actually keeping quiet about something that's bothering her) or it really isn't important. That's all there is to it.]

She's certainly clever. Doesn't surprise me that she's always a step ahead.

[Mostly because Jacinthe seems pretty... easy to read even if you aren't a Psychic-type...]

C'mon, we're almost out.

[personal profile] scolipite 2025-10-24 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh, not good. Not exactly a surprise either, as this was going way too well. Corbeau pushes his glasses up as he considers before finally releasing Scolipede from his Pokéball.]

Get that Teleport ready, Gardevoir. Scolipede and I can buy us some time.

[The bug stamps his feet on the ground in agreement, charging forward on Corbeau's orders to engage the two ahead. Scolipede is his strongest (and favorite, but don't tell the others) companion and with Earthquake, taking on multiple enemies at once is easy. Well, unless they're Flying-types, but for now, Scolipede can draw their attention.]

[personal profile] scolipite 2025-10-24 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
[With Jacinthe and Aurorus focusing on the enemies Scolipede can't hit, there's no reason not to go all out. If we've been forced into a battle, may as well make it fun, right? And it is fun - Scolipede looks like he's having a blast too, eagerly smashing Earthquake into Gunk Shot and X-Scissor to take down a Pokémon before Gardevoir gives the signal. Corbeau's manic grin settles into something a little more neutral as he recalls the bug and holds on tight.

...Right, in hindsight, he probably should have tried to prepare himself for the feeling of being yanked halfway across Lumiose. Ohhhhhhh Arceus, give him a moment—]

He's fine; nothing a Super Potion won't cure. Let's try to avoid needing to Teleport in the future, though.

[He may be looking a little paler than usual, but it's fine...... he's fine....... Is it really any surprise that Corbeau himself is also weak to Psychic-type attacks—]

[Corbeau waves her off, same as he would any concern from the Rust Syndicate. (Philippe would be just as worried, no doubt.)]

I'm fine, just unaccustomed to traveling like that. Just give me a moment to sit down.

[He's steady enough, he just needs a minute until everything feels like it'll stop spinning...]

You don't have to thank me, though. Just doing my job.

[And then, after a brief pause as he considers...]

I'll give you a battle that'll make up for the ones you missed tonight. Sound good?

[He's not exactly sorry about getting in the way of her fun back there, but he can acknowledge that it sucks to be told you can't do something you really want to do. Especially when it's a bit of normalcy in an otherwise hellish and unpredictable, turbulent time.]
scolipite: (✦ 002)

[personal profile] scolipite 2025-10-24 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
[Ah, finally a chair! He is sitting his ass down until the world stops spinning.]

Hah, then I'll live up to those high expectations of yours. Count on it.

[He does have the type advantage against her, after all... so no wonder she'll enjoy it, since she's fighting a difficult and uphill battle even without considering his own skill as a trainer. Mega Scolipede oughta put her in her place. For about five minutes, maybe.]
scolipite: (✦ 011)

[personal profile] scolipite 2025-10-24 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Corbeau knows better than to underestimate an opponent. You never know exactly what they'll end up doing, even if you have full knowledge of their Pokémon, moves, and their general battle strategies. Battles are unpredictable, which is why he likes them so damn much. They're a welcome relief from the uphill battle he's fighting in making Lumiose a better place. Their unpredictability is welcome because it keeps him on his toes in the best way and it makes him work, win or lose.

And Jacinthe certainly doesn't take it easy on him. Gardevoir is the biggest threat, and he feels like he's secured the win when Gyarados manages to take her out early, but Jacinthe's SBC isn't for show. Hell, he knew she was a skilled battler, having seen her fight a certain trainer earlier, but being up against her even with a type advantage...

It's thrilling. He loses, but it's a hard-fought battle and he can only thank his Pokémon for the fantastic performance and accept his loss with grace. To Corbeau, battling isn't about winning or losing. Sure, it's nice to win, and he would like to climb further in the Z-A Royale's rankings, but it's a form of stress relief, and something his Pokémon all greatly enjoy. So even though that loss will sting for some of them, it's still a damn fun time.

And some small part of him wonders if maybe he was a little too harsh on Jacinthe, given how much fun this actually was.]
