[Philippe is missing.

For as long as Corbeau has known him, the man has been unflinchingly predictable. He is a man who remains stalwart in his beliefs and thoughts regardless of what challenges he faces. He is a man of principle and honor, and one Corbeau has come to rely on more than he ever would have thought possible. He's also an exceptionally skilled trainer and one who can fend for himself; Corbeau had barely batted an eye when the man said he had a lead he was going to look into, because Philippe would - and should - have been fine.

And yet it's been days and there's been no contact. The entire Rust Syndicate is unsettled and uneasy, and it isn't just because their leader is. Corbeau may be in charge, but many of their older members once served Philippe. He is the backbone of the Rust Syndicate, and for him to vanish into thin air is infuriating. Who would dare mess with him? Who would dare mess with the Rust Syndicate?

Corbeau has eyes and ears throughout the city, and the most he's managed is tracing Philippe's steps. The man hadn't intentionally hid information from Corbeau, but it isn't as though he'd given him many details on just what he was looking into, only that it had to do with the recent troubles befalling members of the Z-A Royale. Jacinthe's latest tourney had ended abruptly due to one of these incidents, and from the reports he's received, it seems her retainer is still in the hospital recovering. Philippe's last known location was clearly following the trail left in the wake of this attack - and the Rust Syndicate is (rightfully) wary of the woman herself.

Jacinthe is nothing to scoff at. Oh, sure, he'd dismissed her as an airheaded, dumbass rich kid at first - hard not to, given her general demeanor and insistence on everything going her way - but that's not all she is. With money comes power, something Corbeau knows all too well. He's worked his way up this far and he knows the extent of his own reach throughout Lumiose, so clearly hers is even greater. Old money like that can reach places even he can't. And with Philippe having vanished entirely... well, might as well start with the woman herself and either rule out her involvement entirely or lead her into the Arbok's den.

Truthfully, he's surprised when she agrees to come and makes her way in willingly. Surely she can see that this is a trap set for her... but maybe without her retainer, she doesn't have any others jumping to defend her. Hardly his place to question his good fortune, so he'll leave it for now.

Golden eyes watch her unblinkingly as she glances away from him, to the spot where Philippe should be standing. It is empty now, of course, leaving just the two of them in the room. The other members of the Rust Syndicate wait outside, Pokémon at the ready should it turn to a fight. Not that he'd be in too much danger if it does; Poison does fare well against Fairies, after all.]

No sense in friendly banter; you want to know why I called you here.

[It isn't a question, he's certain of that. Corbeau pushes his glasses up, eyes narrowing as he continues.]

Philippe is missing. [Not information he'd like to hand over, but information that can be found if one were to look hard enough anyway.] Last time we had contact with him, he was looking into matters involving the recent attacks on members of the Z-A Royale. More specifically, your organization - the Society of Battle Connoisseurs.

[He lets that hang in the air for a long moment; let her put the pieces together and realize the danger she's in if she doesn't tell him what he wants to know.]

Tell me what you know about his disappearance.

[...Though given her reaction, he has a feeling he already knows the answer.]

[Corbeau watches as her posture tightens almost imperceptibly. She recognizes the danger she's in now - if she wasn't fully aware of it before, anyway - and answers with the practiced ease and grace he'd expect of her. The answer is what he expected as well, though some part of him had hoped that this would be easier. No, it makes sense - she doesn't know, which is why she willingly walked in here on her own, because she hadn't realized the danger.

He exhales, finally breaking that unblinking, Seviper-like stare.]

He told me he planned to stay out of your hair if he could help it. [Mostly because he didn't want to get roped into some more shenanigans.] But the guy's not exactly stealthy. Strange you wouldn't have heard anything.

[Information for information. Corbeau rests an elbow on the desk and then his chin on his hand.]

Four days ago is when he went missing; we lost contact with him shortly after his last report to me indicating that he was going to begin looking into matters with the SBC.

[Which is exactly why he wanted to speak with Jacinthe to begin with. Assuming she was responsible - or even those beneath her - wouldn't do when there's still a very real possibility that it could have been someone else who caught Philippe before he even managed finding anything of interest.]

You've heard that several others in the Z-A Royale have fallen ill, vanished, or otherwise become unable to compete recently, I assume.

[She can likely see where he's going with this already, but like he said, no sense in pleasantries right now.]

[...So this is how the elite live, huh? Hiding their heads in the sand and waiting for trouble to blow over - or being so deeply buried that they're never even aware of it in the first place. Corbeau's eyebrows arch at her words, but aside from looking mildly annoyed, he lets it slide. The important thing is that she's aware now, and it's not like her recognizing the problem in advance would have guaranteed the safety of even her own retainer, let alone Philippe. No sense in blaming her for all of this, even if that would be the easy way to do it.]

Fair enough. C'mon, this way.

[Corbeau stands, gesturing for Jacinthe to follow him. The seats on the side of the office are not exactly the comfiest - they're for meetings between him and Philippe and debtors, after all - but better this and allowing them some manner of privacy for the time being. He's noticed her lack of keystone, and doesn't intend to put her in a situation where she fears for her own safety now that the initial intimidation is over with.

Once they're both seated across from one another on the seats, Corbeau leans forward and folds his hands on his knees.]

I'll accept your offer; I need information, but there's no sense in keeping anything from you. Go ahead with your questions.

[Her words make him feel tetchy. Of course she understands - to some degree, at least - what it's like to have her right hand missing, but there's a difference between what happened to Lebanne and the unknown that faces Corbeau now. A lack of contact is already unnerving enough, but given how many enemies the Rust Syndicate has... well, there's just no telling what could have happened to Philippe. He doesn't want to start assuming the worst, but it's been days and it's hard to believe that he'd be kept alive without ransom demands if he was kidnapped. Harder still to believe that he wouldn't have found a way back on his own if he wasn't.

So he gets where the sympathy's coming from, but it's not the sort of thing he wants to hear right now. It's a struggle to keep the frustration off his face, because he's not exactly mad at her. Jacinthe is out of touch, not intentionally trying to slight them.

But she likewise has a point - she was nearly the one who ended up in the hospital instead of her retainer. Like Corbeau, she has every right to be irritated and seeking answers. Seems that detective hasn't turned up anything particularly useful yet.]

I've heard rumors that it was poison. She's still recovering?

[He hasn't heard anything about her death, at least, and Corbeau can at least recognize that asking if she's dead is a little... unnecessary...

Two and two have not quite made four to him yet, because the mere thought of anyone in his organization trying to poison Jacinthe is just absurd. Sure, they deal in all sorts of under-the-table deals including poisons, so it's certainly not a Farfetch'd idea.]

[personal profile] scolipite 2025-10-23 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
[That... catches him off-guard. Not the accusation, but before that - the implication that even Jacinthe, one of the wealthiest and most influential people here in Lumiose, is unaware of how exactly her retainer is doing. Maybe it says something about the medical system and how uncorruptible it is that the woman can't just buy that information, but mostly it speaks volumes to Jacinthe's worry. It also explains what she goes on to say, and though Corbeau's eyebrows rise, he doesn't allow himself to rile at the accusation.

It is a perfectly sound idea, after all. Where else would one look other than the Poison-type trainer who deals in underhanded deals?]

Rest assured that we do not trade in buying or selling Pokémon, Jacinthe. Should we bring any Koffing into Lumiose, it is only to be used by one of us. If we had any hand in this, it'd be all too obvious - we aren't exactly in the habit of poisoning people, anyway.

[It'd be too damn obvious. Too easy to trace back to them.]

To answer plainly: we had nothing to do with this. I'll vouch for everyone under my command. Not a single person here had any reason to target you, and if I were to uncover any sort of secret plot to poison you, I'd make sure it wouldn't be an issue again.

[The Rust Syndicate wouldn't do something like this. Sure, they're the damn mafia in Lumiose, but Corbeau vets his employees thoroughly. He only works with those he can trust - and he's not exactly eager to work with those willing to kill people.]

Unfortunately, all you've got to go on is my word, but if you'd like to speak with the others here, you may.

[The first part gets a nod; he doesn't need to oversee them, as he knows everyone in the Rust Syndicate can watch their mouth, but being able to glare at them if they're being particularly chatty is nice. No need to tip their hands too far, after all.

But then Jacinthe continues, and... right, it's not like he forgot about the kind of woman he's dealing with, but she's been remarkably restrained until now. This is akin to being run over by Whirlipede's Rollout (something that has definitely not happened to him before); there is simply no stopping a force of nature like this. She has set her mind to something, and she believes it to be a marvelous idea.]

We don't even know who - or what - we're facing just yet.

[Corbeau pulls back then, adjusting his glasses and glancing away to hide the momentary wide-eyed stare and building embarrassment. He's not one to be caught off-guard so easily...]

It's possible numbers could give us an advantage, true, but it could make it more difficult to coordinate and communicate. [Especially with their right hands gone.] Besides, our organizations are not exactly the most... compatible.

[Many of the Rust Syndicate have reasons to dislike the SBC, or at least the fact that they're wealthy and elite. It's not like Corbeau is entirely opposed to the idea, but managing it all seems a little... much. Not to mention having to deal with Jacinthe on a frequent basis—]

[girl why do you THINK the mafia doesn't like you—

Corbeau opens his mouth. Considers. Corbeau closes his mouth. Did he just get outplayed by Jacinthe??? He's pretty sure he just got outplayed by Jacinthe.

She could have just given him the sob story, that she needs protection and hasn't been able to find any. If she'd left it at that, he could have easily turned her away for any number of reasons. But she clearly saw that line wouldn't work and jumped straight to the heart of the matter - offering the Rust Syndicate money to keep themselves safe while only looking after her well-being... well, he'd be a damn fool to say no. It's more work (and dealing with Jacinthe) than he'd really like right now, when he still needs to find Philippe and figure out what the damn hell is happening to members of the Z-A Royale, but...

Well, it's an offer he can't refuse. Because she'll continue to Bulldoze her way through this conversation until he agrees.]

...This isn't in our usual line of work, but an exception can be made for the right price.

[Corbeau moves to retrieve a pen and paper nearby, jotting down said price for her to consider. It likely won't be much to her, but it'll go a long way to helping both members of the Rust Syndicate and Lumiose as a whole. With cash like this, there's a lot more work he can do here. Corbeau pushes the paper across the table for her to examine.]

This is my asking fee. In return, you'll be permitted access to the Rust Syndicate at any time, day or night. Likewise, I'll be serving as your protection. As the strongest member of the Rust Syndicate, I assume that will be satisfactory?

[This means they're going to be spending a lot of time together. It's going to be a headache and a half. He's probably going to hate her by the end of the day. But it'll be worth it - and it can't hurt to have someone else capable watch his back either.]

[Corbeau tries very hard to maintain an air of professionalism, particularly when dealing with clients. As such, he tries very hard to control his expressions and not make Faces while said clients can see them, but his eyes immediately go wide at the price she jots down. Hell, he knew she was rich, but seeing how easily and eagerly she'd part with that amount of money... Well, a little suffering in her company is worth it. This money will be put to damn good use.]

Of course. [He adjusts his glasses like that totally didn't just happen, don't worry about it.] I'll have a room prepared here for you as well, but I'll follow your lead. Wherever you'd like to stay, I'll follow.

[She'll likely be more comfortable in her own quarters... Ugh, whatever, he can put up with their posh high-society nonsense for the sake of this amount of cash.]

I do need to make some arrangements and ensure the Rust Syndicate is aware of the state of things, but that won't take me long.

[Spending time with Jacinthe like this has been... something. Yeah, sure, let's just leave it at "something". Maybe not quite as bad as he was expecting in some ways, far worse in others. That woman has a way of managing to irritate the absolute hell out of him, while at the same time never actually making such a nuisance of herself that it'd be better to call this whole thing off. She allows him plenty of time to carry out his own duties - including using said time to try to get a read on the SBC members. In fact, that might be softening the blow of her unstoppable force to his immovable object (his ego); there's a disconnect between Jacinthe and her followers. He didn't expect them to be anything like the Rust Syndicate because they aren't structured the same or serve the same purpose. The Rust Syndicate is a home for those without one, a place to belong and fit in as long as you follow the rules and carry out your orders to the best of your ability and don't disappoint Corbeau repeatedly. You pat my back, I'll pat yours, that sort of thing.

But the SBC... Well, they're a group of battle-obsessed rich kids who have their own ideals, purposes, and goals, and they don't all align with Jacinthe. In fact, he'd guess that most don't align with Jacinthe. There are those who seem to hang on her every word, but just as many he's caught rolling their eyes or looking at him with disdain, like the woman's words mean absolutely nothing to them. Not the same style of leadership as within the Rust Syndicate, surely, but she shouldn't be ignored so blatantly either.

Needless to say, he doesn't like it, and he can't help but feel a bit bad for her. Is she even aware of it...? Well, it's not like he's going to burst her bubble if she isn't. The important thing is that the SBC isn't entirely free of suspicion - some of them might have reason to want to do away with her if it means they could ascend to her position, after all. Maybe they had something to do with Philippe's disappearance as well. Hard to say right now, unfortunately.

And still hard to say even after Emma's pointed them in a direction - Corbeau appreciates any and all info, sure, but heading out to hit the ground themselves is a bit dangerous. Perhaps they should've brought some Rust Syndicate members along... but it's too late for regrets now. This seems to have been a bust, but it's as Jacinthe is speaking that he notices something. It could just be light reflecting off a Pokéball or a Potion or something, but you never know until you check, right? So off he goes!]

Not sure; give me a moment.

[While he's examining this, he keeps speaking:] We should head back soon. Don't want to be out too late, especially down here.

[Not that it'd be a problem for him, but Jacinthe stands out like a sore thumb, and even worse, she'd likely complain the entire time if the sun sets and they have to walk all the way back. With any luck, the battle zones won't be anywhere nearby, but better to return before dark just to be safe.]

[Hah, that's definitely going to prove useful. He can't make out exactly what the words are - or even which language (and if I'm jossed on this I'll laugh) - but this proves that it isn't his handiwork. Sure, the Rust Syndicate deals in poisons, but theirs aren't in bottles like this, or use language like that. Corbeau retrieves a pair of gloves from his pocket, as well as a bag to place the bottle in.]

Wouldn't call it the "smoking gun", but turns out we've got something out of our little trip down here.

[He holds the bag up for her to see, a smirk tugging on the corners of his mouth.]

Koffing on the label and foreign script; I'd guess this is our missing poison. Emma should be able to get some use outta this.

[Heh. He doesn't need the praise, but it's not like he'll turn it down. That bag is going into his pocket for now as he nods at the words, allowing Jacinthe to take the lead and keep yapping, until—

Well, until night falls, apparently. Corbeau frowns, pushing his glasses up as he studies the time on his Rotomphone. It isn't as late as the Battle Zones usually go up, but it isn't entirely unheard of for them to pop up now at this time of year. In other words, we forgot to account for the changing of seasons and the shorter hours, probably. Or maybe it is a conspiracy. Hard to say right now, but the important thing is that the map is very clearly displaying that we are smack dab in the middle of a Battle Zone.]

Great. Looks like we've got our work cut out for us.

[Corbeau studies the map intently, trying to determine the best route to get out of the Battle Zone quickly. Usually he'd be down to engage in some battles, maybe even obtain a Challenger's Ticket, but we've got bigger things to worry about than ranking up. The sewers' exit puts them in the middle, with a lot of open space, meaning it'll be easy for other trainers to get the jump on them. Definitely not a good thing, given how much they still don't know about whoever is targeting Jacinthe and the Rust Syndicate. Best to try to escape and get back to the (relative) safety of the SBC and ensure this piece of evidence gets to Emma's hands.]

[Corbeau glances over at Gardevoir, and he's already making a face even before Jacinthe starts speaking and turns to head out. Girl, are you seeing this shit—]

Think for a moment, Jacinthe.

[He moves to catch up with her, picking Scolipede's Pokéball from his belt just in case, but not calling the big bug out just yet.]

It's just the two of us, and though we're quite strong, our unknown assailant has proven that they will take underhanded methods to have a shot at you. We don't know who they are or when they'll strike next, and under cover of darkness - and a Battle Zone - they could escape without detection.

[Looks like there are some trainers roaming up ahead... Stay and listen, or carry on with your desired battles, girlypop?]
