[Yeah, no, Sayaka's cheeks puff at that--it's not a very mature look, really, but hearing Mondo say that so easily when he can't assure it is--]
We don't know that. It can't possibly be any easier to just...force people to die like this. And who knows what those people will do? They won't look at us and see two people forced into this, you know...
And if we don't do it right, who knows what the people in charge will do to us?
[As much as the reassurances are nice, Sayaka can't accept them. There's so much here that's unknown, and it sees Sayaka turning away, fidgeting with her sleeves. She shakes her head after, though--but it's probably telling that she's not even pretending to have a smile on her face anymore.]
...I'm sorry. I shouldn't speak so harshly. I know you're going to make sure nothing happens to you--and I'll keep an eye on those bosses and myself, too. But...
I am going to worry about you, either way. You're my friend, after all.
[...Well, that didn't work. Sometimes he's able to get Sayaka to calm down easily, but other times he fucks it up like this. Mondo sighs and runs a hand through the back of his hair.]
Shit, sorry, Maizono. I'm not trying to rile you up. I know we're walking on thin ice here. We've gotta be careful, and there's no telling that this'll be any easier. I know. I just don't want you worrying too much about me, alright? I'm gonna look out for myself, I promise.
[If he can ease her worries even the tiniest bit, it'll be a big help. She's already got a lot she'll have to deal with, after all.]
[Sayaka's cheeks puff again, but this time it's in exasperation.]
You're not riling me up, you dummy. I know you can look out for yourself, but I'm gonna look out for you too. You've always been looking out for me, and I appreciate it...but worrying is just what I do. [Sayaka takes a stand of her own hair and twiddles it, her expression going back to a small smile.] We're supposed to be a team, you know? Which means we've gotta watch both of our backs. But...maybe you do have a bit of a point. I don't want to sound like I don't have faith in you when I do, you know?
So...I'll try not to worry about you too much, but at least let me worry about you a little. Is that a fair deal?
Yeah, that's fair. You can worry a bit about me, but don't go working yourself up too much, got it? I'm gonna look out for you too, don't worry. We'll make it through this and tear down this establishment. We'll make 'em wish they'd stopped with our game!
[...Honestly, it's hard not to be determined when Mondo starts getting spirited like this. Sayaka starts to giggle a bit, but she winds up pumping her fists a little too.]
I won't, I won't. I know it'll be hard, but...I do believe in you, Oowada-kun. And I believe in our ability to put these people in their place, too--we'll make it so nobody has to suffer these kind of games, ever again. They're totally gonna get what's coming to them if we've got anything to say about it!
It will be. We're gonna absolutely make sure of it.
[Sayaka says that much with determination, at least. She really does believe in their ability to do this much, after all. Even still, her look briefly goes kind of sad as something crosses her mind, but...
Well, it looks like they've got the electronics finally set up, given how the electronics in the room start to flicker on--Sayaka's quick to stuff away any notes she has elsewhere, under her desk and out of their sight. It looks like they're coming up to give them both some information, but looking around at this school is an experience already; there's many rooms to keep track of, classrooms and dorms alike, hallways, the whole nine yards...]
...Maybe we should start deciding on what kind of shifts we're going to be having, looking around at all of these. Did they really need to put this many cameras up? This is so much to keep track of!
[The cameras flicker to life and Mondo moves to go check them out while Sayaka works on hiding her notes. There are a lot of rooms to keep track of, not to mention plenty of hallways, and even some spots that seem like they're pretty well-hidden from the cameras. Nothing too big, but large enough that it could pose a problem if the participants are aware of it. The technology present here is a bit beyond him as well, but it should be something he can learn in time.]
We're probably gonna want someone up as often as possible just in case there's some kinda emergency. Or a rule-breaker. 'Course, we're still going to need to sleep and eat... Shit, this seems like a fuckton of work.
[like that didn't occur to him before now??]
Look, we aren't gonna have to worry about all the rooms at first. See here? Parts are blocked off with these gates; doesn't look like they'll be able to make it upstairs at first.
[So just like their own game, parts of the building will become available after every murder. It's not a pretty reminder, but at least it means they'll have less to keep track of right now.]
Yeah, like...how are we supposed to eat? How are we supposed to decide when we can actually sleep? Knowing them, they're probably going to try to set up night watches too, and that means they'll just be up all night long...
[...Yeah, Sayaka may just be realizing that wow we are in over our head here. Uh. Shit? Shit. This is going to be pure torture, holy--
Wait.]
Gates? Where-- [Hang on, Sayaka is dumb and actually didn't notice and she's scrambling to find which cameras they can be seen--AHA.] Oh thank goodness. This will definitely help to keep them under control, at least for the time being...
[...]
That...still does leave us with the problem of how we're going to be able to do much of anything else, though, with so many people down there at once. I didn't hear anything about the kitchen closing at any time--did you...?
[please. please tell her they at least have that, we'll likely die otherwise]
[Those are really damn good questions, and Mondo frowns for a moment before finally attempting to take control of the cameras in the foyer. Thankfully, despite his limited technical know-how, he's able to work it out enough to get a better view of the posted rules.]
"Participants are not permitted to sleep outside the dormitories." Looks like that at least ensure they'll be in their rooms to sleep. If it's anything like our game was, the kitchen is probably locked down at night too. Maybe we should take a look around to see if there's some back way into the kitchen?
[Oh! That makes sense; Sayaka was honestly worried that they were just going to leave them with no safe way to get food, but that's at least a small saving grace.]
That might be a good idea. We should probably get as familiar as we can with this place while we're here...the last thing we want is for the others to get familiar with this place before we do, you know? Once these people leave, of course.
Who knows? We might find something interesting, too.
[Sayaka smiles, but it's clear there's a deeper meaning behind that.]
Yeah, 'course. We've gotta know this place like the backs of our hands so we can always stay one step ahead.
[He nods at Sayaka's words; while he doesn't know exactly what she's referring to, he can tell that it's something they need to discuss later, when they aren't being watched.]
Hopefully they keep the kitchen as well-stocked as the last one, I'm starving.
Agreed. Ugh, I could really go for some ice cream right about now...
[There's footsteps coming, though, and Sayaka makes sure to smile politely and try to handle the people coming in; they give the two of them status updates on everything being in working order, mostly, and that their first batch of participants will be in tomorrow morning. They don't give any sort of helpful information beyond that, though; it's clear that this is definitely going to be a trial by fire for them, and that they're going to need to prove themselves.
The people are out lickity split, though, and Sayaka...messes around with the cameras a bit to make sure they're really gone when they finally leave, and she smiles at Mondo when the coast is finally clear.]
Let's get going, then. I thought they were gonna be here forever, but it looks like we got some time before this starts. Let's make the most of it!
[Ah, here they are, the suits. They're exactly what Mondo was expecting - stiff and formal, dead-set on following protocols and handing over what information they must before getting the hell out. Good, at least they don't overstay their welcome. Mondo keeps his mouth shut and does his best not to look annoyed, and once they're gone he breathes a sigh of relief.]
Thank fuckin' god, I was worried they'd want to hover while we were making our preparations. But yeah, c'mon, let's see what we can make. While we're there, we probably want to snag whatever snacks we can so we've got something to eat during the day.
[Having access to the kitchen only at night is going to be a pain otherwise... Anyway, let's go!!]
[But alright, let's go!! Down this rather creepy hallway. Honestly, this reminds her way too much of Hope's Peak and just how eerily fucking empty it is is already setting Sayaka on edge. There's plenty of graffiti here and there too; plenty of things damning multiple masterminds of the past, last words, even a few hearts with peoples names in them...but there are spots that seem to have been painted over, erased entirely.
It's kind of strange, to be walking down a place like this. It'll take a bit to get to the kitchen from here, but...]
...You know, I'm surprised that they haven't gotten rid of many of the things people have left behind here. Look; you can see all of these different patches where they've covered everything up, but they left behind quite a bit...
I didn't think this place was a high priority for them, but it's still kind of strange, isn't it? Especially considering how clean the place we were all held was.
[Mondo accompanies her, frowning at the graffiti as they walk. It's really weird to see, honestly... Especially compared to the last place they were in. It seemed like they couldn't get away with leaving anything out, much less messing with the walls. He tried to do that and it was gone the next day, so what gives?]
I'm thinking that the stuff they covered up was the stuff they had to clean up. Maybe something that'd point at a previous mastermind or something. The rest of it isn't anything important, so why bother cleaning it up?
Maybe they even like the groups that come through here knowing that they aren't the first.
[Ugh, annoying. Not to mention really fucked up, but that's just going to be par for the course now, it seems.]
We should probably make sure they cleaned up the rest of the place, like the rooms. Don't want anyone getting their hands on something they shouldn't.
[But it does make sense, now that Sayaka thinks it. They'd probably want the people who come here to know this is a place where they're likely going to die. All of it serves to make Sayaka stomach churn.]
But...I guess it makes sense. It certainly gives this place a grim sort of history, though...
[But Mondo brings up a good point--one Sayaka actually tilts her head at at first, though.]
I doubt they'd really just not clean up the rooms if people were gonna be using them, though. Wouldn't that be strange? Well, maybe it would be a good idea to check just in case, but they're probably already taken care of...
[Their path leads directly into the hallway with all of the rooms, at least, so Sayaka can at least use something the people gave her--one master key to all of the rooms, into the first door they see...
...
Oh, this was a MISTAKE]
Wh--how did they make any of this stuff?!
[Mondo will likely be able to see all of this once the door just kind of creaks open, but there are. A fuckton of macgyvered weapons? There's also like, actual weapons, bottles of poison and shit, but there's pool cues with knives attached, balloons with paint in them, some sort of makeshift fucking bow and arrow--whoever was in here was armed to the teeth???]
I'm never saying that it can't be that bad ever again. Oh my god.
[Mondo follows and watches as Sayaka gets the door open... And wow.]
Holy fuck.
[This is an impressive amount of makeshift weaponry?? Mondo enters and grabs the pool cue with a knife taped on the end, eyes wide as he studies it. There's so much duct tape here?? There's no way they're getting the knife off easily.]
I'm actually pretty impressed. Like, damn. This person went all-out. I mean, of fuckin' course they didn't clean this shit up for us, but still. Holy fuck.
Right? What on earth were they trying to do, fight the people behind this?
[...]
...In hindsight, that's likely exactly what they were trying to do. I'm honestly kind of impressed too, even if it amounted to nothing, it seems...
[Their own group wasn't even close to this insane. What the fuck. What the actual hell is wrong with these people.]
How stuck is that knife onto there? Are we going to need something else to cut it off? [Ugh, just--hang on, she's kind of just gonna start taking care of some of this shit or at least start to sort it out, holy actual fuck--] Or maybe...we should just hide these in the office? It's not like they gave us any actual weaponry at all, did they? Maybe it'll be good for us to have something in case they decide to do this again, but--
[Oh god, one of the paint balloons rips open as Sayaka tries to pick it up, and she jolts back.]
[Give him a moment to see if any of these other pool cues and their stupid knives can be freed... nope. Nope, okay, this sure is happening—]
Fuck, this person was no amateur, these would probably hold up in a real fight.
[Not that he's suggesting trying it out, but damn... At Sayaka's question he looks over and winces as the paint balloon pops.]
We're the unluckiest bastards in the whole damn world to be stuck dealing with this shit. Look here, leave this crap to me. Go get cleaned up and start on dinner while I move all this shit to the control room, okay?
[Honestly, Mondo isn't wrong. Their luck is just the shittiest in the world right now, and it doesn't look like it's going to improve anytime soon. So with a sigh, Sayaka nods her head.]
Yeah, that'll work much better. If there's anything you need help with, though, give me a holler and I'll come by to help. But let me go clean up and make something good, then.
[And with that, Sayaka is absolutely gonna be off--she'll be cleaning herself up and scooting over to the kitchen. Curry is definitely an old, reliable recipe for her, but she decides to do something a little different; Mondo's likely gonna be in there for a little while, so maybe something a little more hearty and filling would be good.
It's what sees Sayaka making a stew, and by the time Mondo gets done down there, it'll likely almost be done; Sayaka will just be in the kitchen adding some finishing touches. Not that she's just making that, though, because she's absolutely making dessert since she has the time. So the smells from the kitchen will likely be a little mixed, but it should still be good. Hell, it even sounds like she's singing to herself a bit if he listens closely...]
[Moving all the weapons to the control room is a pain in the ass, but thankfully it isn't anything particularly difficult. Mondo has to take several trips to get them all, and those paint balloons are being popped in the bathroom so he has less space to clean up once he's done. Moving those seems like a bad idea!! So after everything's moved and the bathroom's clean, he finally makes his way to the kitchen.
Something definitely smells good, though it seems like Sayaka's making something else too, huh... Anyway, he pauses in the doorway, leaning against it and listening to her sing for a moment. It's easy to forget when trapped in a murdergame that she's a goddamn idol. Sayaka Maizono is a name known throughout countless households and her music is something that has touched a lot of people. She doesn't have that here, but that sort of fame is kind of baffling to think about. Mondo didn't exactly stay up on pop culture, so if he's heard her songs, it's only in passing. It's so bizarre that they never would have met if they both hadn't attended Hope's Peak and were then thrown into their first murdergame. It's even more bizarre to consider that only their second one actually brought them together.
It's weird thinking about it. He doesn't like it. So after a moment he pushes off the door frame and approaches.]
[Sayaka turns easily when Mondo approaches, her smile as calm as ever in this situation. It's something she's trained herself into; no matter what the situation is, she just needs to smile and stay calm and collected. Smile, keep calm, and be polite.
It's a simple motto, and one that rings true even now. Even if she's a little more inclined to let Mondo see the uglier sides, it's still easy to smile around him, and it's...nice, honestly. It's strange that they ended up so close; her managers would have her head if they saw her getting close to a guy, after all, and Mondo's definitely a rough person who's hard to approach. She never thought they'd ever become friends.
What a strange, strange world they live in.]
I thought you might like it, Oowada-kun! After working so hard, something nice and filling would be good, so I figured some nice, meaty stew would hit the spot. There's plenty too, so you can have as much as you want!
[Oh! The timer goes off for the oven too, and Sayaka goes to grab an oven mitt--]
Oh, and I baked some Castella cake too--would you like some? I was honestly craving something sweet, and once this cools off, it's gonna be delicious.
All of that sounds good. Feels like it's been forever since we last had a good meal.
[Thinking about it is going to do his head in. It feels like it's been weeks since the final trial, but somehow that happened earlier today. His sense of time has been completely fucked by murdergames. It definitely won't be improving here.]
It kind of has, hasn't it? Well, at least we can fix that for the time being.
[...Sayaka's trying really hard not to think about it either, don't worry, Mondo. Either way, Sayaka smiles as she pulls the cake out of the oven to cool off.]
It's a rather delicious treat! It's like a vanilla cake, but it's much spongier. I put some honey in the cake batter too, so that'll make it a little extra sweet...hopefully not too much, though!
Oh, feel free to help yourself while I get this out of the pan to cool!
[Sayaka's just gonna do that nice and carefully, mostly trying to make sure the cake doesn't crumble or fall apart in the process. Have at, Mondo!]

Whatever you're making smells great, Maizono.

[He peeks into the pot, nodding appreciatively.]
Not sure I'm familiar with Castella cake, though.
